Coburg’s key position stocks have been boosted with the signing of former Sydney Swan Jack Maibaum, who joins the club for the 2021 season.
Maibaum spent four years with the Swans after being taken with pick 45 in the 2016 National Draft. He managed 37 games for the Swans NEAFL team across both 2017 and 2018 seasons where he was groomed in a key defensive post, and looked set to push for an AFL debut in 2019 – before being cruelly struck down with an ACL injury on the eve of the season. He was delisted at the end of the year, only to be re drafted on to their rookie list a few weeks later. However, in 2020 he was unable to break through for that elusive debut and was delisted for a second time.
Drafted from the Eastern Ranges, Maibaum won All-Australian honours representing Vic Metro in the 2016 National Under 18 Championships where he played as the team’s number one key defender. While he is best suited to a key defensive post, Maibaum also has the capability to play as a key forward, highlighted by his draft year where he alternated between both ends with the Ranges and his school, Melbourne Grammar.
For his height, Maibaum displays outstanding mobility and agility, and also has great closing speed when it comes to an opponent getting away on the lead and in general play. Maibaum cannot wait to get started with the Lions after four years in Sydney.
“I’m pumped to be playing for Coburg for many reasons, but most of all a fresh start with new people and a new game plan which reflects modern footy very well,” he said.
“It’s exciting to play in the new tier 2 competition as we’ll be getting a few different looks at some of the northern states clubs in addition to the already standing VFL teams. It should be a great year for high quality football all round.”
Coburg General Manager Sebastian Spagnuolo said of this signing, “Jack is a player that we’ve had our sights set on for a while, he actually agreed to join the club prior to the start of the 2020 season but Sydney re-rookied him so it’s bizarre that he ends up joining us now for 2021 without having missed a VFL game of footy.”
“Jack will compliment our backline nicely and we are very excited to have him join our club”
Over the next few days and weeks the club will continue to announce both re-singings and more new player signings as it prepares to succeed in 2021.
