Lion leaders locked in for 2021

The Coburg Football Club is delighted to announce the Senior Men’s Leadership Group for 2021.

The players elected to reinstate Ryan Exon and Peter McEvoy as co-captains for the new VFL season, with the duo to be joined as Jesse Corigliano as the team’s sole vice-captain. Deputy vice-captains, Luke Bunker and Jacob Ballard round out the impressive leadership group.

McEvoy and Exon first became Coburg co-captains in 2019 and even though the 2020 season was canceled, their leadership and ability to keep the playing group connected was a testament to their character.

Former Calder Cannon, Corigliano has been on the club’s playing list for the longest amount of time, so it’s no surprise that the players saw him as a fit and capable leader to take the group forward. In terms of on-field impact, the defender will look to be back to his VFL Team of the Year form from 2019 again in 2021.

Bunker joined the club from the Northern Knights for the 2017 season and quickly impressed many with his ability to compete hard and play a selfless brand of football as a midfielder. Meanwhile, Ballard joined the club in the lead-up to the 2020 season and although he is yet to play an official VFL game for the club, with over 75 VFL games under his belt and as a VFL Premiership winner in 2019 with Richmond, he provides great leadership qualities.

Upon the naming of the leadership group for 2021, head coach Andrew Sturgess said; “We’ve got a really good leadership group and a nice blend of some experience. We could’ve chosen 15-20 guys to be part of the leadership group. Just because somebody doesn’t have a title doesn’t mean that they’re not leaders. Everybody has the capacity to lead in a certain way. I look forward to seeing the growth of our group under those guys.”

This leadership announcement came during a significant pre-season for the Coburg Senior Men’s team, which culminated in a trip to Longwood in Country Victoria for its intraclub practice match and community camp. The match provided a great hitout for all available players and coaches.

Now, the team turns their attention to playing against opposition for the first time since February 29th last year when they take on Geelong’s VFL side at Deakin Uni’s Waurn Ponds Campus this Saturday, March 20th with the game starting at 1pm.
