INAUGURAL SEASON LIONS RE-SIGN

By Daniel Foley

Coburg has secured another two key players from its inaugural season with Ciara Elliott and Anna Morrow re-committing to the club.

Morrow and Elliott were mainstays of the team’s line-up this season, representing the club in all ten games.

Playing through the midfield, Elliott won the Vicki Cleary Most Courageous Award and was named Lion of the Round in Round 3. The 23-year-old also averaged 12.3 disposals, 4.3 tackles and 2.2 clearances per game.

Elliott said she was very pleased to be back playing another season at Coburg and is very excited for 2022.

“I think last season was sort of a test to see our competitors and where we sit against them and also connecting with the girls in the team as we were all new to each other. I think this season coming we will be more confident and have potential to make the grand final,” she said.

Small forward Morrow said they were stoked to be re-signing and was looking forward to improving on the club’s first season in 2022.

“[I’m] excited that we are able to keep majority of the group together and build on the foundations we built in our first season,” Morrow said.

“Although we’re a new team, we have high standards and expectations of ourselves. So, we will be looking to be competitive with the top teams and make a strong play for finals.”

Key position player Eloise Gardner has also re-signed.

Gardner did not play a game for Coburg in 2021 but did have an impact in the VFLW with 10 matches for Essendon.

“I’m very pleased to be re-signing with the club and appreciate their support of my VFLW commitments with Essendon, it’s a fantastic group with some exciting times ahead. Hopefully I can have an impact on the group whether it be on or off the field,” Gardner said.

“It was disappointing to have last season cut short again so it’s exciting to hopefully get a full season underway and get back to the game we all love.”
