2022 VFL Leadership Group

By Nathan Spicer

The Coburg Football Club is pleased to announce our men’s leadership group for the upcoming 2022 season.

For the fourth consecutive year Ryan Exon and Peter McEvoy will be leading the club as co-captains.

McEvoy as always was humbled by the decision to be re-instated.

“As a group we’ve been on a journey to becoming more successful and I feel like we’re very close. For me personally it’s just been a humbling experience to be leading a club with such a rich history,” said McEvoy.

Senior Coach Andrew Sturgess is happy with the growth the pair have shown in their tenure.

“I’m really proud of them. Some people just develop because they’re in the position but these two consciously look for opportunities to grow,” he said.

Current longest serving player, Jesse Corigliano, will return as vice-captain along with Jacob Ballard and Luke Bunker in the leadership group.

“Any one of us could be the captain. We pride ourselves on having a diverse group and have a real trust in all six of us to get us through the challenges of a season,” said skipper Peter McEvoy.

The new addition to the group will be star defender Jack Maibaum, who in only his second season at the club has already endeared himself to his teammates and coaches alike.

“The essence of being a good leader is being a good person. You can’t fake the role and Jack is just a real humble and selfless guy,” said McEvoy.

Andrew Sturgess approached the leadership group at the start of the season and the decision was unanimous on who should be the sixth member, Maibaum was the man.

Sturg had nothing but praise when asked about Maibaum, “he’s going to be another valuable addition to the leadership group he holds himself and his teammates to high standards and by being elevated into this position he will have enormous growth.”

After a convincing win against Essendon’s VFL team last weekend, the Lions will have their final pre-season hit out against Werribee this Friday night at Highgate Reserve start time 7PM.

A bye for Round 1 follows before the season proper starts against Port Melbourne in Round 2.
