SEWFL Practice Match Report: Lions Hunt First Prey

By Mathew Asciak

Both the women’s senior and development squads had their opening contests of the pre-season against Old Melburnians and Old Haileybury respectively.

Heading over to Fisher Oval in Keysborough, the development squad were the first cab off the rank for the double header, having their first run as a squad against an opposing side.  It was tight affair, with Coburg emerging victorious with a slender 4-point victory.

New to Coburg this season, Ruby Taranto, Alex Volk and Nicole Steward all scored a goal on unofficial debut, with Sophie Damon also getting on the scoresheet.

Speaking post -match, development coach Blake Wadley spoke about the positives to take from the performance and what can be built upon during the season.

“I think it was a really good hit-out, the way we wanted to move the footy… the way we looked for each other and gelled as a team as it was the first time playing together for nearly all of the girls,” he said.

The senior squad made light work of their opening pre-season encounter with Old Haileybury with a resounding 64-point victory.

Pre-season games allow for coaches to move magnets around, allowing players to add more strings to their bow, and this was the case in game one, with Mia Muscat starting up forward and having immediate effect, kicking the opening goal.

Outscoring the home side six goals to one in the opening half, the Lions cruised to a comfortable win in the second half.  The Lions dominated the play, locking the ball in their half and applying constant pressure of the defence.

Development squad:

Coburg: 5.7.(37)

Old Melburnians: 5.3.(33)

Seniors:

Coburg: 11.4.(70)
