Many Lions who played on the weekend looked to make the most of their chances of getting back to playing VFL Football.
VAFA
Many Lions who are aligned to VAFA clubs in the Premier and Premier B competitions did not play, which included Josh Watson, Ben Overman, Harry Andronaco, Alex Lukic and Tom Jepson.
In Premier C, Macgregor Cameron managed a goal and was best on ground yet again in a big 58-point Monash Blues away win over Mazenod.
Max Thompson turned out for Old Carey in the VAFA Under 19 Division 2 competition and was named in the best players in a 94-point win over Aquinas.
EDFL
Daniel Guccione and Pascoe Vale moved one step closer to securing a finals berth with a 37-point win over Essendon Doutta Stars.
Ben Reddick managed two goals in Strathmore’s massive 133-point win at home over Glenroy.
Bailey Ryan managed a goal in Hillside’s loss away to Tullamarine.
Northern FL
Luke Bunker once again turned out for Heidelberg as he went up against Ryan Sturgess and Nathan Howard for Bundoora. While Sturgess in his first game back from injury was awarded Bundoora’s best on ground further pressing his claims for a return to VFL action and while Howard continued to try hard in the ruck, it was Heidelberg and Bunker (who was named amongst their best and pushed his claims for a VFL recall) who came out on top by 30 points.
Trent Warren played for MacLeod in a 16-point win away to Hurstbridge.
Eastern FL
The feel-good story of the round was 2022 recruit Sam McLarty making his return from a serious shoulder injury suffered in the opening preseason game, when he turned out for junior club Doncaster East for the first time as a senior player. McLarty performed admirably as Doncaster East defeated Berwick.
Goulburn Valley FL
Riley Mason kicked a goal in Seymour’s 39-point win away to Benalla.
Stay tuned for next week’s edition.
