Coburg is set to make its grand final debut in the SEWF Premier division on Sunday versus an old rival in the Seaford Tigerettes down at Skybus Stadium, Frankston.
The Burgers secured their place in the Grand Final to set up a rematch of the first week of finals against Seaford after defeating the Mornington Bulldogs in the preliminary finals 53 – 49 in a come from behind win in a heart stopping manner with a clutch goal from Regina Said to secure the win.
Last time these two sides met was the first week of the finals with the winner securing their spot in the grand final, the “Burgers” were coming off an undefeated season finishing off their 2022 campaign 14-0, would go down to Seaford in this match up suffering their first loss of the year with the final score 25-28 .
Both sides were heavily represented in the 2022 SEWF Premier Division Team of the Year with Coburg having six individual representatives; players Dacia Abela, Maddie Edwards, Brittney Gray, Rachael Burton, Teagan Brett, Natasha Phipps & coach Liam Cavanagh named to lead the squad, while Seaford had 5 individual representatives; Tiara Annear, Danielle Lawrence, Dayna Smith, Michelle Podnecky & Jessica Baguley.
The Lions and Tigresses have faced off six times since the Lions joined the SEWF Premier Division competition in 2021 with the wins being split between the two sides at three each as Seaford claimed the latest victory in the first week of finals to tie the head to head record up with the Grand Final to decide who will have the greater win/loss record at the end of the game.
Coburg’s come from behind win last may have been the wakeup they required as it is the type of fight they have shown in past games that has put them in a winning position from the opening bounce. They may have their hands full with other players needing to step up as those who were selected in the Team of the Year are sure to have a target on their back and heavily focused on.
