Former Murray Bushrangers captain Nick Mellington has agreed to terms with Coburg for the 2017 season.
Mellington has managed 28 games of VFL football since debuting with Richmond’s VFL side in 2014 as a 23rd man whilst still with the Bushies. A former Vic Country representative at under 18 level, he has also managed senior Football with the Goulburn Valley League’s Benalla, where he was a premiership player in 2015.
He managed sixteen VFL games in 2016- his best performance being in the round 20 win against Sandringham. Mellington boasts a powerful long left foot kick, a good decision making and ball winning ability, he averaged 16 possessions a game in season 2016.
Entering his 3rd season in the VFL, Mellington can’t wait to start 2017 with more assured senior opportunities at Piranha Park.
“I suppose Coburg, I guess without any disrespect to Richmond, are a proper club. They’ve got a reserves side and a senior side, and everyone you train with from day one are the guys you’re going to play with so it’s going to be exciting to be involved in that and build towards something, and hopefully have a consistent year on field individually, and with the team.”
List and Recruiting Manager Sebastian Spagnuolo was thrilled to have secured the services of the talented midfielder.
“Nick joins us having played some senior VFL footy with Richmond VFL in 2016. We see Nick being able to be more than capable of playing a heap of senior footy with us as a big bodied midfielder and we’re also excited by the leadership qualities that he brings to the club, even at a young age.”
“Nick sees Coburg as the VFL club that can develop his game further and also as the club that allows him to play against the best players outside the AFL week in week out.”
Stay tuned for more updates regarding list management updates ahead of the preseason, beginning soon, and the 2017 season.
