2016 Cannons Captain joins the Lions

20161111_172001Coburg are thrilled to announce the signing of 2016 Calder Cannons Captain, Jaidyn Owen. Of all 2016 Cannons graduates, he is the first to sign at Piranha Park for season 2017.

The Woodend-Hesket junior managed 17 games in 2016, where he was named among his coaches best six times and managed an equal tenth placing in the best and fairest. He managed seven games in 2015.

Owen also represented Vic Metro in 2016. A key position player comfortable of playing at either end of the ground as a swingman, he initially was penciled in as a forward. After being sent down back whilst at Vic Metro, he would also be sent down there at Calder where he remained for the rest of the season and would play a key role as Calder overcame their lackluster start to the season to make the finals once again.

Standing at 196cm, Owen boasts a great overhead marking ability, good decision making, and is able to read the flight of the ball well. A solid defender one on one, he also holds good speed and agility for his size.

“It’s about pushing myself to the highest level that I can play, I’m looking forward to playing with a few new boys as well as some Cannons team mates,” Jaidyn said.

“Jaidyn is a very promising young key position player. We’ve seen him play both forward and back for Calder in 2016 and he’ll give us great flexibility and versatility in 2017 and beyond. He also has leadership qualities and we’re really looking forward to working with him to further his development,” said List and Recruiting Manager Sebastian Spagnuolo, who was pleased to have secured the talented tall.

“We’re also delighted to have secured Jaidyn a full-time work opportunity via one of our Major Sponsors, in Comselec Services,” Spagnuolo added.

While we look forward to seeing Jaidyn in action in season 2017, it also continues to further strengthen our partnership with the Cannons.

Stay tuned for more recruits to be announced within the next week.
