Blake Mullane is this week’s Lion of the Round, after his impressive efforts in Sunday’s 62-point loss to Northern Blues.
In what was a disappointing result for Coburg on the inaugural Vicki Cleary Tribute Day, Mullane managed to collect 22 disposals and kick 4 goals; his first within the opening minute of play.
But despite playing well, Mullane wishes they could’ve gotten the win.
“I was pretty happy my performance, however it doesn’t count for much due to the fact we didn’t get the four points.” he said.
“I see it as a building block and something I can build on for this week and the weeks to come.”
A former Frankston Dolphin who signed on this season, transitioning has been quite easy for him, thanks to the “great bunch of guys here” who made it an easy move.
Yet to win a game this season, Mullane believes in order to get the win this week against Williamstown, the boys need to play simple footy for four quarters.
“I think we need to strip it right back; we have seemed to go missing during different stages of the game over the past few weeks,” he said.
“Poor starts against Collingwood and Box Hill cost us, and leaking goals against Northern Blues in the last quarter; if we can keep the effort and pressure high for the whole game I believe it will give us a great chance to win.”
Adding more depth to the Lions’ attacking side, Mullane’s pace and versatility, along with wanting to put in good performances week in and week out, is something Lions’ fans can look forward to this year.
Head Coach Peter German is also excited about what Mullane can bring to the Senior side, impressed with the work he put in during the pre-season.
“His fitness allowed him to play more in the midfield, and now his ability to use his power and speed has seen him play some influential football,” German said.
“We are looking forward to seeing him continue to develop his football to new levels as the season progresses.” he continued.
