The Coburg Seniors have been defeated by 89 points in their Strathmore Community North-West Cup clash against Essendon this afternoon at Piranha Park.
The Bombers kicked away in the second half, hurting the Lions on the scoreboard and ultimately finishing 22.18 (150) to Coburg’s 9.7 (61).
The first term saw Coburg have a promising start, kicking four consecutive goals and going into the first break double Essendon’s score.
Two quick goals and peppering behinds saw the Bombers grasp the lead in the second, with Coburg holding on to keep the deficit to just 2 points.
But things took a turn for the worse in the third, where Essendon kept Coburg to just three goals while going on to kick seven of their own.
A goal after the siren to Hisham Kerbatieh brought the margin back to 30 points at three-quarter time, and gave the Lions momentum going into the final term of play.
But the Bombers weren’t finished, firing away with a ten-goal blitz to end the day.
Some missed targets and fumbling handballs hurt the Lions in the centre, and struggling to get the ball out of their defensive-50 was costly.
On the scoreboard, Peter McEvoy managed to kick four for Coburg, while Kerbatieh finished with two.
Keenan Posar was impactful from all areas of the ground, collecting 25 disposals, followed by Luke Bunker with 24 touches and four tackles, and Nick Mellington with 22 possessions.
A disappointing finish to what was a solid start, the Lions will look to get over the line in their next match against Casey Demons on June 4.
With a bye next week for the VFL game against the WAFL, come down to North Port Oval to see Tom Goodwin in action and show your support.
