Sam Lowson has been named the Motoink Motorcycles Lion of the Round this week after his four-goal effort in Saturday’s match against Box Hill.
The East Ringwood product is now in his second season at the club, finishing last year with eight goals from ten games after being called up from the Development League.
Lowson kicked three of Coburg’s seven first-quarter goals on Saturday, with pressure and run providing plenty of goal opportunities, allowing the Lions to get off to such a great start,
“As a forward line, our pressure was really good; we get told every week to defend first and press hard early to cause forward half turnovers, and I believe we did that really well for three quarters,” Lowson said.
This pressure was on a different level from the previous games, and was one of the biggest positives the playing group took out of the weekend.
“The last couple of weeks we were a bit late to set up, and stick those early tackles and force them to rush,” he continued.
Unfortunately for the large contingent of Coburg, Box Hill kicked away in the last quarter to come away with a comfortable win.
While this was disappointing, Lowson doesn’t think the Lions are far away from a strong four-quarter performance.
“We just need to stick to our structures and game plan and put it in place for the whole game, not just two or three quarters.”
“Once we do that and can stop the little mistakes we make, I think we will go a long way to winning more games of footy.”
Coburg will be looking to pick up its first win of the season this Sunday at 1pm when it hosts North Melbourne at Piranha Park.
