Exciting small forward Hedley Smith has become the latest Coburg recruit, putting pen to paper for the 2019 season.
Originally from Western Australia, the 23-year old spent two seasons with Fitzroy Stars in the Northern Football League.
In 2018, Smith was named in the best-on-ground nine times out of his 15 games, and managed nine goals for the season.
He also managed a 4th placing in the Stars Best & Fairest and arrives at Coburg with the hopes of taking his football to the next level.
General Manager Sebastian Spagnuolo looks forward to seeing what Smith can do with this opportunity, and how he can continue to grow as a footballer.
“Hedley’s story is quite a remarkable one; he came to Melbourne from a tough environment in Western Australia and originally tried out with us for 2018 as part of our ongoing relationship with the Fitzroy Stars,” Spagnuolo said.
“He came back to do the 2019 preseason as part of the same program, but has not put a foot wrong.”
“He is running well, is fit, has found more of a work-life-football balance, and is a great person around the club – often helping our property staff before and after training.”
“We’re very excited to give Hedley this opportunity to be a VFL footballer, and we look forward to seeing him develop his footy further.”
