Co-captain and key forward Peter McEvoy has re-committed to the Coburg Lions.
McEvoy had another strong season in 2021 playing all 10 games and kicking 20 goals in his sixth year at the club. One of the highlights of his year was a Lion of the Round performance in Round 13, with 11 marks and four goals against the Northern Bullants.
The 30-year old has now played 74 VFL games and has been co-captain of the Lions with Ryan Exon since 2019.
McEvoy said he was very excited to re-sign with the Coburg Football Club, who is like a second family to him.
“Coburg provided me a VFL opportunity in 2016 and I’ve since formed incredible lifelong friendships and memories over the past six years. But more than that, I’ve poured my energy, dedication, professionalism, skill and heart into helping shape the right culture, attitude and framework to help our club be successful,” he said.
“However despite our progress, we definitely have unfinished business in qualifying, competing and succeeding in finals which is my mission.”
After the club’s improvement in 2021, McEvoy said he cannot wait for the 2022 season.
“I am very excited because our group has that genuine belief and I also feel I’m currently playing the best football of my career. I desperately want to ensure we achieve that extrinsic success for our dedicated members and the next generation of players at the club,” he said.
“We took huge steps in 2021 and pushed many of the best teams in the competition to the last few minutes of games.”
“I believe this season offered incredible learning and development and our group is now ready to take the next step and be a serious finals contender in 2022. We have invested an incredible body of work over the past few seasons to build a connected, resilient and highly competitive group. We are ready.”
Senior coach Andrew Sturgess said re-signing McEvoy was important on multiple levels.
“Pete is a tremendous leader for our club, I think he provides that level of maturity and experience that a lot of our group don’t have right now and therefore a lot of the boys really look up to Pete.”
“He’s a really good role model and example not just for his on-filed attributes that he brings to the table but also what he carries off it.”
