Key defender Jack Maibaum has re-signed with the Coburg Football Club.
After impressing in his first year at the club, he will pull on the red and blue again in 2022.
Maibaum averaged 14.1 touches and 6.6 marks per game in 2021 and took at least 11 marks in each of the last four matches. The 23-year old ended the season on a high being named the Lion of the Round for his dominant performance against Williamstown in Round 16.
Maibaum said he had a really enjoyable first year and was stoked to be re-signing with the club.
“That’s what the coach really harps on about to make a fun football environment and that’s exactly what he’s done and it’s gonna bear the fruits with hopefully a few more wins next year,” he said. “I just love the people there, I love the club and it’s only been a short time, but it’s really grown on me.”
After featuring in every match for Coburg in 2021, Maibaum is looking forward to the 2022 season.
“It’s made me love footy again and I couldn’t ask for much more to be honest and plus I reckon we’re going to be growing and growing each year from here on out,” he said.
Coburg senior coach Andrew Sturgess said he was super excited to be able to re-sign Maibaum.
“We knew Jack coming from the Sydney Swans and being on an AFL list for four years that he’s clearly a talented player and we’d heard really good things about him as a human being and he’s delivered and probably exceeded our expectations in both of those areas” he said.
Sturgess said that Maibaum found his way with form towards the back end of the year and probably turned himself into the most dominant key defender in the competition.
“There was a lot of trust within the group and from his peers that he was gonna go out and play on the opposition’s best forward week in week out and essentially just blanket them and take them out of the game,” he said. “To have him on board again I think just gives us stability in the back end and a real leader and someone that cares a lot about other people around him.”
