Coburg has announced several exciting new signings for its women’s program in 2022.
Senior coach Liam Cavanagh gave a rundown of some of the standout new recruits ahead of the upcoming season.
Kurtis Shine
Shine joins the club from Aberfeldie where she captained the team to a EDFL Premier Division flag in 2019 and also made the EDFL Team of the Year.
“She is one I’m really excited about, ticks a lot of boxes for us. Fit, tough, smart & great leadership skills – I think she is someone who can come in and contribute straight away,” Cavanagh said.
“I think she is adding depth to our backline this year, she’s incredibly tough, really driven. She took to our program like a duck to water, she was really craving the environment that we have there around pushing and challenging standards.”
Angel Georgallis
The 18-year-old joins the Lions in 2022 after playing 11 EDFL games for Westmeadows in 2021 which included four Premier Division matches.
“Angel is an exciting young talent, because she is so talented, I think this pre-season is the first time she has really been pushed to see how good she can be, and she has responded. She has shown some incredible bursts at training so far, I think if she can find consistency, she could be a real weapon for us,” Cavanagh said.
Brittney Gray
Gray was named in the best for West Footscray in five out of seven appearances last season and finished third in the club’s B&F.
“Brittney has been smashing all the fitness testing, she brings a great work ethic which rubs off on those around her too. She wants to learn and she is a very versatile type. I’m excited to see where she can get to this year for us,” Cavanagh said.
Mikayla Kotas
The 180cm key position player finished in third place in Laurimar’s B&F last season and played nine matches.
“Mikayla has blown us away with her class, it’s going to be like having two Sophie Damons this year – they are both very similar players. Tall, skilful & classy with a really great read on the game – with those attributes she can be damaging for us in a number of different areas,” Cavanagh said.
