Preview
The first game of the season is finally upon us. After a bye in Round One the Lions will be taking on Port Melbourne in the season opener at home tomorrow afternoon.
Port Melbourne begun their campaign last week up in Sydney against GWS were they lost 10.13.73 to 7.13.55. Harvey Hooper 29 disposals, one goal and Nash Holmes 22 disposals, two goals were the Borough’s best.
After a strong pre-season which included a demolition job of Essendon there is a great sense of optimism around Piranha Park.
The Lions side was announced this afternoon and has been invigorated with new talent. Edyn Sibbald, Lachlan Walker, Flynn Gentile and Ben Overman will all be making their debuts for the Lions.
It is an even more special occasion for former Calder Cannons teammates Gentile and Overman who are also making there VFL debuts. Gentile has impressed head coach Andrew Sturgess throughout the pre-season who labelled him as one of the players for fans to keep an eye on.
Sibbald a 200cm tall forward joins us from the Essendon VFL setup and will be hoping to form an intimidating partnership with skipper Peter McEvoy. Walker is a former Box Hill Hawk who plays across the half backline and midfield.
Fans will be happy to know exciting small forward Josh D’Intinosante is looking back to his mercurial best after an imposing pre-season. JD suffered an injury at the beginning of the 2021 season which robbed the Lions faithful of watching the electrifying forward.
The new talent will join existing Lions stars McEvoy, Boucher, Bunker and Thompson. The boys will be looking to employ Sturg’s defensive and contested game plan which was starting to yield results in the pre-season.
