Seaford was able to hold off Coburg and secure an 11-point victory in the second meeting between the two sides of the year. After being goalless in the opening term the Lions fought back to be three points down at half-time.
Form
Coburg is in fine form after completing an undefeated run in their three practice matches and will be raring to hit the field to play for premiership points for the first time in 2022.
Senior coach Liam Cavanagh Q&A:
What is your review of the pre-season, how has the side developed?
“Very happy with all the work that has been done up until this point. We have had a big emphasis on making sure we don’t look at our pre-season block with regret, wishing we had done more work. I can honestly say at this point I feel we made the most of every opportunity we had, hopefully that carries through into round 1,” Cavanagh said.
“Just under 50% of our list is new to the club, so we spent a lot of time and energy on enhancing the connection & care between the group – we have a great mix of happy & connected players at the moment. As far as on-field, the main tweak has been developing the individual skillsets of our players & the roles they play – we have still got out broader game plan but are really focussing on developing our players – we think that’s where our largest chunk of improvement will come from this year.”
Were you happy with how the teams performed across the three practice matches?
“Definitely, particular impressed with the development team who are going to be very exciting this year. We have a long list of players in that development team who are going to push & demand for spots all season, I think that’s exciting and keeps anyone playing seniors very accountable – we have a line-up of girls who are clearly capable of playing a senior role.”
Are there any players that you think could really step up to the next level this year?
“Above all else, I am really excited for all of our girls to just go up 2-3% this year, if we can do that collectively, we are a 100% better team as a whole.”
“I’m excited to see what Tash Phipps will produce this year, she has grown some significant elements of her game this year and we now have a genuine ruck through her. This in-turn has freed up Sophie Damon to play more of an outside role, I think Soph is probably one of the best players in the competition so I’m excited to see what she can do with her new role this year. As far as new recruits, Kayla Koropeckyj has added a lot to our side This year, from Praccy Match 1 to 3 she really cemented herself as an important cog in our midfield rotation.”
What are your hopes for this season?
“The goal for us this year is to be there at the pointy end of the year for both teams. We have reflected on having no justifiable excuse as to why this year can’t be successful, so as exciting as that prospect is, it’s up to us now to actualise those hopes. The great part about playing Seaford first up is that we will know exactly where we sit on Friday night.”
