Last Time We Met

Round 4 – 2019

Box Hill 16.12.108

Coburg 8.9.57

It has been three years since we last played the Hawks. The clash in 2019 proved to be a forgettable one for the Lions. After being up by five points at half time the Hawks overran the boys storming to a commanding 51-point victory. Sam Lowson was kicking goals back then just like he still is now he finished with four majors.

Form

Coburg – The Lions head into the game with a 1-2 record. A memorable first up win against Port Melbourne was followed by a disappointing loss to GWS the next week. Last week the boys put up a great fight against in form Casey going down by 35 points. The two losses have come against the top two sides in the competition who sit 4-0 respectively. This week the Lions have a big chance to get some reward for their hard effort.

Box Hill – The Hawks are coming off the bye. They sit with the same record as the Lions 1-2. After dropping to 0-2 with a close loss to Collingwood and a 46-point defeat to Carlton the Hawks got their first four points in Round 3 with a 44 point victory against Sandringham in a curtain raiser at the MCG.

Preview

A huge game awaits the Lions on Sunday. The annual Anzac weekend clash between the clubs is one all players and fans look forward to when the fixture is released. This year there is added significance. With both clubs sitting with a 1-2 record this is a crucial game for both sides. The Lions, whilst losing their last two have done so against the two remaining undefeated teams and put up a respectable showing against the rampaging Demons last week. It will give the squad confidence knowing that if they play their best footy, they can take it up with the benchmarks of the competition.

There will be three changes to the starting lineup. Unfortunately, Tom McKenzie is out with illness after an impressive performance last week. He will be joined by Aaron Clarke and Lachlan Walker on the sidelines.

Josh D’Intinosante is back for the big game and the mercurial forward will be hoping to turn it on after missing out on selection last week. There will be two debutants this weekend. Josh Kemp makes his Lions debut after kicking seven at his local club of Gisborne last weekend. Kemp is a mid-sized forward who loves to take big marks. He is definitely someone who will excite the Lions faithful.

It will be a special day for the Thompson family on Sunday. Max Thompson is the final inclusion for the weekend. Max is the brother of our star midfielder Charlie Thompson. Max will be hoping to emulate his older brother who has collected over 25 disposals in both of his last two games. Max was recruited from Oakleigh Chargers and joined the club at the start of this season.

The game will be free to stream on the AFL app and website.
