Sturgess re-signs

The Coburg Football Club is thrilled to announce that senior men’s coach Andrew Sturgess has signed a two-year contract extension.

Sturgess will now remain at Piranha Park until at least the end of 2024, after taking over as coach in the lead-up the 2020 season.

Coburg CEO Sebastian Spagnuolo said that Sturgess had exceeded the board’s expectations.

“If you take out the covid affected 2020 season, the club has seen major improvement year on year, not only from a wins, losses and overall competitiveness point of view when comparing to previous years but equally importantly from a team morale and playing list retention point of view,” he said.

“The 2022 season still offers great opportunity for the ongoing development of the team to continue going in the right direction but Lions members should sit comfortable in the knowledge that for the following two seasons there will be ongoing stability under Andrew’s leadership.”

“Andrew’s strengths are his strong and constant communication, high emotional intelligence, care for Coburg FC’s people and the time that he invests in the individuals that make up the team and squad.”

“The playing group and football department are completely behind Andrew and his contract extension announcement was met with great excitement, a sign of how much he is valued and loved by the football department and playing group.”

Sturgess said he was glad to be continuing as coach for another two years to continue the journey the club is on.

“I’m obviously happy, as anyone would be to have their place of employment say, ‘we want you back’, but it’s more than that to me. This is the club I regard as my home and the people that I get to work alongside, players, coaches, staff and volunteers, as my extended family, plus the lifelong friends that I’ve made along the way as well,” he said.

“I’m just incredibly grateful that I get to continue to build what we’ve started at a place I hold very dear to my heart alongside people I have great admiration and love for.”

“The thing that excites me most is what we could become and the opportunity to just grow as we continue on this journey together. While I took over leading into the 2020 season which seems like a long time ago, between then and now, we haven’t actually played a lot of football, so I’m excited to play more games and continue to watch us grow and improve.”

“We’ve really stripped things back this year and have measured success by other metrics, and we are on the right track. We want to win more games, but we know it’s a continual process and journey that takes time.”
