On a cold and windy day at Piranha Park, the development side got our Sunday double header off to a great start as they beat the Bass Coast Breakers by 19 points.
In a tough and physical contest, the Lions were able to nullify the Breakers forward line, while Coburg’s own Ruby Taranto starred in the Lions forward half as she showed off her physical prowess while kicking two goals of her own.
The other goal kickers for the development side were Mikayla Kotas and Kristelle Vanderwolf as Coburg defended a fast-finishing Breakers team win by 19 points.
The seniors match started in similar fashion as the two teams slogged it out in cold and windy conditions.
The Lions were able to control most of the first quarter thanks to the efforts from Lauren Suleiman and Maddie Edwards in the midfield. Suleiman was particularly noticeable as she showed her ability to burst away from packs and send the ball deep inside 50.
After a wayward start to the game from the Lions, Rachael Burton was able to intercept a kick out from Seaford to snap the first goal of the match for Coburg.
The start of the second quarter brought thunder and lightning as the Lions looked to extend their 11-point lead.
And while the Lions were able to control possession and move the ball quickly through slick ball movement and great marking, they failed to get reward for their hard work in front of goal.
They proceeded to kick five behinds and two out on the full before Burton was able to run and kick her second goal with only seconds left in the half.
The third quarter saw the contest even up as both sides played a highly contested style of football due to wet weather.
The only goal kicker for the second half was forward Teagan Brett who snapped a great goal four minutes into the third quarter.
The final quarter saw Coburg’s defence be put under pressure for the first 10 minutes as Seaford surged forward. However, the Lions were stoic in defence and only allowed two behinds to be scored by the Tigers.
Coburg ended up winning the match by 29 points and kept them undefeated for the 2022 season.
