SEWFL FINALS TEAM SELECTION – WEEK 1

By Mathew Asciak

Coburg has made two changes to the seniors squad for their qualifying final against Seaford on Saturday in Frankston, with Chloe Prpic and Mia D’Agostino included in the line-up. Tanya Hendy and Hayley Baber will line-up for the development team against the Warragul Industrials.

The development team will have several inclusions for their qualifying final against Warragul, with Baber, Hendy, Nankiville, Craige, Morrow, May and Cavanagh joining the squad.  Prpic and Camilleri are the two omissions from their line-up from the final home and away game.

After an interrupted inaugural season last season, the senior and development teams have roared into their maiden finals campaigns, finishing with 14-0 and 13-1 home and away records respectively.  The seniors will be facing a Seaford side who also had a successfully season, finishing 2nd with a 9-5 win-loss record, but were unable to secure a victory over the Lions in their two encounters during the season, with their most recent clash resulting in a 29-point home victory for Coburg in round 12.

Teagan Brett will be looking to continue her fantastic goal kicking form in the finals, booting a competition high 20 goals from 11 matches, for the senior squad, and tallied three goals against this week’s opponents. Skipper Maddie Edwards will look to lead from the front and continue to apply relentless tackling pressure, alongside Kayla Koropeckyj, who has been exceptional in close, collecting high clearance numbers all season long.

The Burgers also had three prolific goal kickers in the development squad, with Alexandra Volk, Mikayla Kotas and Kaitlyn Richie finishing in the top 5, with 16, 15 and 13 goals respectively.  Alana Wenban is listed at centre half-back this week, but Wenban has showed her versatility throughout the season. A defender by trade, Wenban has moved into midfield at times this season, adding another string to their bow.
