Lions captain Maddie Edwards claims her maiden Coburg best and Fairest Award at the end of year celebration for the Coburg Football Club.
Our courageous captain claimed 92 votes for the night, trailed closely by midfield counterpart Brittney Gray (83) and Claire Cashman (82) rounded out the podium.
Leading at the halfway mark to just 2 votes, Edwards polled the maximum 10 votes on four occasions in rounds 7,8,13 and 14 to create the separation on the voting amongst the top 3.
The 21-year-old has led from the front both on and off the field, leading the Lions out in a maiden grand final birth after a superb home and away season, taking out the minor premiership and remaining undefeated with 14 wins.
Edwards quickly developed a reputation for being tough in the contest, racking high tackle numbers across the season. In the Lions round 11 clash versus Seaford at Piranha Park, Edwards amassed an astonishing 17 tackles, which is the current game record for Coburg.
The midfielder said she was proud of herself but couldn’t have done it without her teammates.
“Being introduced to such a positive environment … makes you want to do better and makes you want to be a better player so I couldn’t have done it without the group this year,” Edwards said.
Natasha Phipps (79) finished in 4th place after a superb individual season playing in the ruck, supplying our midfield with first use all season long. Rounding out the top 5 was serial goal threat, Teagan Brett (76).
Clearance machine Kayla Koropeckyj (74) finished in 6th position, while inaugural Best and Fairest winner, Dacia Abela (72) finished 7th. There was a tie for 8th spot, with Kurtis Shine and Amy Duguid finished on 70 votes.
Completing the top 10 were Sophie Damon and Lauren Suleiman polling 69 votes each.
