Quigg enjoying welcoming feel at Coburg

Having signed on at the Lions only two and a half weeks ago, Nic Quigg has been welcomed with open arms into the Coburg playing group.

One of nine recruits announced so far this offseason ahead of season 2023, Quigg signed on two and a half weeks ago after spending the first few weeks of preseason as a train-on.

Originally from the country town of Seymour, Quigg recently said that he enjoyed growing up and playing footy in a town 100 kms north of Melbourne.

“Started off my junior career with St Mary’s, which is a junior side in Seymour and then moved across to Seymour Lions for some senior footy,” Quigg said.

“(Seymour)’s a really great community and a great club.”

Growing up in Seymour his family was very close and was very supportive in his footballing journey, including his late father

“My family (is) very close, (but) I lost my dad when I was 12 to cancer. I have an older sister who’s 22 and a younger brother who’s 13.

“Sam [my younger brother] is still in school, my sister’s just graduated Uni so she’s a nurse, and my mum [Kelly] works at Seymour College.

“They’ve all been very supportive of my footballing and helped me out heaps along the way, getting me to training and doing everything for me.”

The last two seasons saw him on NAB League side Murray Bushrangers list, with this year seeing him captain the side.

Averaging 19 disposals, 4.7 inside 50s, 3.9 tackles and 4.1 marks per game, Quigg added it was an honour to captain a side that made the first week of finals.

“It was really unexpected but we had a great bunch of boys, a great group of coaches, everyone  worked hard so it was a real honour.”

Since signing on, Quigg has felt right at home and was relieved to have been offered a spot at Coburg.

“Definitely eases the mind knowing where you’re playing next year. All the boys have been very welcoming, all the coaches have been really good, getting to know me and everything.

“It’s been really good, can’t wait for the season to start and to get into it all with everyone.”

Both the playing and coaching group have also been supportive in many other ways since Quigg’s signing was announced.

“When my signing got announced a lot of (the boys) sent me a message, welcoming me to the club.

“All the coaches as well have given me feedback, helping me, asking me if I’ve got anything that I want. Everyone’s been real good, and helped me out a lot.”

Growing up Quigg’s favourite player was Patrick Cripps, however his mentor throughout the years has been ex-Coburg and now Seymour man Jack Murphy.

“Jack’s helped me out heaps in training, my skills, making big decisions, everything. He’s been a real great help.”

And whilst he hopes to excel individually, Quigg is a team-first man and hopes to help Coburg gain success in 2023.

“I’m a hard-working player who’s willing to put in the work and be a great teammate.”
