Coburg has announced that two more new Lions will make their club debuts in the round 4 VFL game against standalone rival Williamstown this Sunday.
The round 4 hitout sees the Lions head to Williamstown for the first time since 2019 and searching for it’s first win of 2023.
23 year old, 196cm key forward Daniel Johnston makes his VFL and Coburg FC debut along with 21 year old off season recruit from Essendon VFL Max Simpson.
Joining them as a round 4 callup is running defender Jhye Baddeley-Kelly who plays his first game for the club in 2023 following his 15 games for the club in 2022.
For Daniel Johnston, his football journey has had him travel many a kilometre since leading the then TAC Cup goalkicking for the Murray Bushrangers in 2016. Johnston joined Norwood in the SANFL where he spent the 2017-2020 seasons before moving back to his hometown, Barooga in NSW.
Johnston kicked 2 goals at community football level in Mooroopna’s Goulburn Valley FL win against Shepparton Swans last week to earn his callup to Coburg’s team for his VFL debut.
Max Simpson makes his club debut following some solid training form aswell as preseason form with Aberfeldie. Simpson is a versatile backman that can also play forward and will provide plenty of run to the side. Simpson played 14 games for Essendon VFL in 2021-22 before joining Coburg.
Johnston, Baddeley-Kelly and Simpson have replaced Josh D’Intinosante, Liam Podhajski and round 3 debutant Nic Quigg (injured) for the game against Williamstown.
Josh Watson, Trent Warren, Dan Owen and Jonathan Marsh have all been added to the
extended squad.
The Lions, coming off a 46 point loss in round 3 to GWS, head to Williamstown who have won two of their three games in 2023 and in round 3 defeated Port Melbourne by 77 points.
All Coburg fans and members are needed at DSV Stadium (Williamstown FC) on Saturday afternoon at 3.05pm to support the team and club!
