VAFA Team Selection: Round 9

By Mathew Asciak

Four changes for the Lions side as they make the trip to Camberwell to face Old Scotch for their round nine clash of the VAFA Premier Season.

Versatile utility Alana Wenban will make her first appearance in the Senior line-up for the 2023 season after putting an impressive run of form in the reserves, juggling minutes in the middle and forward areas of the Coburg system.

Defensive duo Tara Chetcuti and Julia McArdle return to the fold, as does attacking-minded midfielder, Mia D’Agostino

Laila Zayat and Elsa Mangan are both unavailable for selection this week and will not feature for either squad this week.

Match Preview:

We have reached the midway point of the 2023 VAFA season and both the Women’s teams are poised for a spot in the finals, as they face 2nd placed Old Scotch this Saturday at Camberwell Sports Ground.  The Lions had mixed results in their last time out, with a narrow 2-point victory in the Seniors and a 7-point defeat for the Development team away to Brunswick.

Despite not kicking a major in the final term, the Lions defence held firm in the closing phases of the clash against the Magpies, as they did the previous week against Caulfield.  Michelle Sliwinski was a standout in the Coburg defence, the lone defender who was named among the best afield in the win.

Ruby Taranto was superb for the Lions against Brunswick, kicking the only two goals for the away side.  Lisa Anderson was named the best for the Lions, putting a great performance from across half-back.

Old Scotch are coming off a big 38-point win over Fitzroy, bouncing back from a narrow loss in the week previous.  Forward Jade Wise kicked 3 goals, while Lucy Morley and Georgia Kerr also managed two apiece.
