SCOTCH FIRE EARLY AND POUNCE ON LIONS

By Mathew Asciak

A four-goal opening quarter from Old Scotch positioned them overcome a Lions side who are fighting 4th spot on the VAFA Premier ladder, prevailing by 55 points on the road.

The Lions started slowly, conceding the first goal early on which gave the away side the early momentum.  Scotch was putting great pressure of the Coburg ball carrier, forcing rushed turnovers in their forward half, resulting in easy uncontested marks inside 50, often looking the short option which was proving successful.

Lauren Suleiman and Kiana Minchin were doing a solid job down back, putting some strong defensive tackles and effective spoils to help the wave of forward 50 attacks from Scotch.

Coburg faired much in the second term and were able to create multiple repeat entries and have a better showing around stoppage situations.  Tayla Dinuccio put in a solid shift after quarter time, fighting valiantly in midfield in what was a tough afternoon for the midfield group.

Georgia Sampson was a constant threat for the Lions in the forward 50 and kept presenting as an option for the four quarters.  The Lions had to wait until the final term to boot their one and only goal of the game, finding Teagan Brett unmarked from close range, who went back and slotted in through early in the term.

Old Scotch added another goal to their tally in the quarter to run out 55-point victors.

Our Development team flexed their muscles in the opening half, kicking 4 unanswered goals to create a sizeable buffer for the away side to chip into.  Armina Sherifi opened the scoring for the Lions with a well taken set shot.

Taking an 8-point lead into the first change, the Lions looked to kick on and extended their lead through Alana Wenban, who broke through a pair of would be tackles and booted the Lions second.  They would register two more majors for the term though Sarah Jolly and Ruby Taranto, putting the Lions in a great position at the main break.

Inaccuracy plagued the Lions in the third term, only managing to register six minor scores.  Malaya Rodezno was establishing her dominance in the ruck, winning hit-outs and managing to get a clearance or two, working well with co-captain Nat Todaro.

A second goal to Taranto at the start of the final term helped take the margin past 40, eventually running out 41-point victors.
