Coburg captain Tom Goodwin led the way for the VFL ruck brigade in the State Game, despite being defeated by the WAFL 20.14 (134) to 10.11 (71) on Saturday afternoon at North Port Oval.
The only representative for the Lions, Goodwin’s efforts were impressive and effective in his first appearance for Victoria.
Finishing with 35 hit-outs (the highest of the game), 12 disposals and two tackles, our skipper was also named among the best on ground with VFL State Coach Justin Plapp also calling Goodwin “a really pivotal person” in the team.
Coburg Senior Head Coach Peter German believed Goodwin went into the State Game with the same mindset he has when playing for the Lions.
“You could see he played with the same physical robust, competed strongly in the ruck and followed up well; its all the things he does at Coburg,” German said.
“Victoria got the same performance that he gives us on a weekly basis, and I think they (VFL State Team) would’ve been pleased with his endeavour and the physical nature he went about it.”
Coburg General Manager Sebastian Spagnuolo was also proud of Goodwin, the first Coburg State representative since 2014.
“Playing in the State Game for Victoria is a major achievement, and Tom acquitted himself very well.” said Coburg General Manager Sebastian Spagnuolo.
“Tom would be disappointed with the result but should take pride in being chosen to represent his state as the number one ruckman.”
“The club is always proud of the effort that Tom puts in, which was again on show on the weekend.” GM Spagnuolo continued.
While the VFL were in it for the first quarter, the WAFL kicked away in the second and upped their intensity; ending their 23-game losing streak on Victorian soil.
The VFL hasn’t won a state game now since 2012, when they overcame the Tasmanian State League by a massive 108-points.
