It is with great pleasure that Coburg announce the signing of 2016 QAFL Rising Star Winner Cassidy Haberfield from Surfers Paradise.
At just 20 years of age, Haberfield has already managed 43 games of senior football in the Sunshine State competition, and is coming off a 2016 season where he was awarded with his second consecutive best and fairest for Surfers Paradise to go alongside his Rising Star Award, and also managed a fourth place finish in the Grogan Medal in the competitions best and fairest.
Haberfield also represented Queensland in division two of the under 18 NAB Championships in 2013 and 2014, and was also a member of the Gold Coast Suns Academy, representing the Suns in the NEAFL across two seasons in seven games. A strongly built midfielder, Haberfield has earnt a reputation in the competition for his consistency, and his form in 2016 was a massive factor in his sides improved performance from 2015.
Having only recently moved to Melbourne upon the beginning of preseason, Haberfield can’t wait to challenge himself at a higher standard.
“Just the professionalism and the group that I’ll be surrounded by should push me to the next level of my footy, I think,” he said.
“Cassidy comes from the AFL Queensland competition where even at a young age he’s been able to captain his club and show great work ethic in his 40+ senior games,” said Lions List & Recruiting Manager Sebastian Spagnuolo.
“He’s a former Gold Coast Suns academy member who came to us very highly recommended. Another exciting young player that wants to play at the highest level possible.”
Stay tuned for more updates next week.
