Jim Sullivan Medalist Goodwin recommits to the cause for 2017!

Coburg are delighted to confirm that Best & Fairest winner Tom Goodwin has re-signed with the club for season 2017.

Having won the clubs Jim Sullivan Medal Award after a sterling season, Goodwin was subject to the draft interest of a few AFL clubs, however ultimately was overlooked as a result. Nevertheless, Goodwin’s 2016 was all about stepping up. While he was once again the clubs number one ruckman, Goodwin’s leadership was vital throughout the entire season, especially with the departure of key personnel at the end of 2015. Alongside his Jim Sullivan Medal win, it too resulted in him being named the winner of the Inaugural Nick Carnell Leadership Award.

And once again, with more experience departing the club for season 2017, Goodwin’s presence will be ever vital- however he won’t be alone. While fellow former Box Hill teammate Peter McEvoy returns from injury, he’ll also be joined by other fellow former Hawks teammates Pat Lawlor & Ryan Exon-both with considerable VFL experience.

After failing to make the grade at SANFL club Port Magpies and with VFL rivals the Box Hill Hawks, Goodwin credits Peter German for his rapid rise- having inspired him to step up and improve his fitness following the individual review of the 2015 season. While he was courted by a few state league clubs across Australia following that seasons end, ultimately Goodwin stayed, and he can’t wait for what’s in store for season 2017.

“I love the club, and the people around it and playing at the highest possible level that I can. We are improving each year and I am looking forward to helping and developing the young blokes that we have brought to the club.”

“What I’m most excited about is how far we can improve this year. A huge preseason, and the second and third year players stepping up has got me excited to see how far we can push everyone in the VFL competition.”

Sebastian Spagnuolo is delighted knowing the 201cm, 104kg Ruckman is going around again in 2017.

“Tom is one of our most important players and also one of our best leaders at the club, so we’re rapt to have him re-sign with our club for 2017. He’ll be looking to add another fantastic year of VFL footy to what’s become a decorated career, given he won our Best & Fairest in 2016,” Spagnuolo said.

“Tom will no doubt be looking to have an even better year and continue to develop his fine leadership qualities amongst our young group.”
