2016 Northern Knights Leading goalkicker Corey McKay is yet another graduate from the Preston City Oval to make his way to Piranha Park, having signed for the 2017 season.
McKay, whose father Craig is the Football Manager of the clubs Super Rules side, joins the likes of 2016 teammates Luke Bunker, Matt Perry and Chas Roberts at the Lions in 2017, and will also join 2015 teammates Michael Ercolano, James El Moussalli and Mick Mattingly.
In his 16 Knights games, McKay managed 23 goals to take out the clubs goalkicking award. To go along with that, it resulted in him named among the Knights coaching staff’s best on six occasions. His best performance came early in the season where he managed a 32 possession performance against Queensland- being named best on ground as a result.
McKay who is best suited as a small forward, however he too can play as a midfielder, and is looking forward to beginning his VFL career with Coburg and cannot wait to get started.
“I’m looking forward to playing the highest level of football I can, as well as develop as a player and a person.”
“The thing that made me choose Coburg was that they had such a young list and watching them play the exciting footy that they did last year made me want to be a part of their culture,” McKay said.
List & Recruiting Manager Sebastian Spagnuolo was delighted with yet another signature coming from the Northern Suburbs.
“Corey plays as an elusive small forward that is able to find space and sniff out a goal. He creates opportunities with his work rate and he’s a player that will develop into a fine senior player for our club,” Spagnuolo said.
“Corey has a family connection to our footy club and we’re really excited to now have him join the club too.”
Stay tuned for more announcements in the new year, as we return to our preseason campaign next week.
