Lions Announce 2023 VFL Preparations

The Coburg Football Club’s Mens VFL team will be kick starting it’s 2023 VFL campaign with a
series of three exciting practice matches that Lions members are encouraged to attend.

New Senior coach Jamie Cassidy-McNamara has been buoyed by the preseason training
performance of the team and will first coach the side on Saturday 25th February when the team
takes on the Northern Bullants at RMIT University’s football oval.

Coburg then plays against Port Melbourne on Saturday March 4th which is a very special day in
the calendar for all standalone clubs who have come together to organise the inaugural VFL
Standalone club carnival day at Highgate Recreation Reserve in Craigieburn (home of the
Calder Cannons). The special day will feature three great games of standalone club football
with the Northern Bullants vs Williamstown in game 1, Frankston vs Werribee in game 2 and the
day then finishing with Coburg vs Port Melbourne in game 3 which is due to commence at
3.15pm on the day.

To have a day where all standalone clubs are promoted and celebrated for the role we play in
the football industry has long been the idea of Coburg FC CEO Sebastian Spagnuolo and it is
great that all standalone clubs and the AFL have supported the concept to make it a reality.
Standalone club fans will be able to renew their 2023 club membership, buy merchandise and
the canteen and coffee facilities will be open and available to spectators on the day.
If you can’t make it, the AFL is co-ordinating a live stream of all games on the day too….but
please get along to support the day if you can!

Head of State League Competitions at the AFL, Jennie Loughnan said about the carnival “We are thrilled to support the six Victorian-based standalone clubs in what will be an action-packed day of football at Highgate Recreation Reserve on Saturday, March 4.”

“We commend all clubs for the collaboration they have demonstrated in putting the day together and encourage all football fans to head along for the triple-header, as the six Victorian-based standalone clubs ramp up their preparations for Round 1.”

Coburg’s third and final preparation game will be on Friday March 10th at Casey Fields against
the 2022 VFL Premiers Casey Demons who will provide a great contest in the leadup for the
round 1 clash against Collingwood on March 25th.

ICYMI….the AFL have released the VFL’s round 1 fixture for 2023. Coburg heads to Victoria
Park in Abbotsford to play against Collingwood’s VFL team with the game to begin at 11.05am
on Saturday 25th March. All Lions fans are encouraged to get there and support the team.

Coburg will host it’s first game at Piranha Park in round 2 on April 1st 2023 with the opponent
and time to be released by the AFL soon.

Now that match preparations are in place, we still need more Lions to activate #LionMode and
