Coburg Football Club has taken another confident step forward in the 2025 VFL season, notching a 32-point win over the Sydney Swans in Round 9 at Barry Plant Park. The 11.23 (89) to 8.9 (57) result sees the Lions level their season record at 4–4 and continue a strong run of form, with four wins from their last five matches.
The only blemish in that stretch remains a heartbreaking one-point loss to Frankston, a game marred by controversy. The Lions will be keen to set the record straight in the return clash later this year.
Midfield Engine Room Leading the Way
A key driver of the Lions’ resurgence has been the dominant form of their midfield group. Jack Bytel (38 disposals), Joel Trudgeon (36), Flynn Gentile (32), and Hugo Bromell (23) were again instrumental, providing consistent drive and defensive pressure through the middle of the ground. Joe Furphy, in just his third game as the primary ruck, offered valuable support around the contest.
This group continues to gel impressively, providing a solid platform for the team’s recent success.
Momentum Building
Following a gritty Round 8 win over Preston, the victory against the Swans reinforces the growing confidence and connection within the squad. A strong blend of experienced VFL campaigners and emerging young talent is coming together at the right time, with Coburg aiming to push further up the ladder as the season unfolds.
Ladies Day a Huge Success
Off the field, the club’s annual Ladies Day was another highlight, with over 100 women of Coburg filling Barry Plant Park and creating an incredible atmosphere. Guests enjoyed a day of celebration and were treated to some of the best hospitality in the VFL.
