LIONS SECURE CANNONS YOUNG GUN

By Mathew Asciak

The Coburg Football Club is happy to announce the signing of versatile youngster, Riley Mason for the next two years.

Able to play almost anywhere on the park, Mason will be eager to use his athleticism and attacking ball use to help break the game open for the Burgers.

After playing his local football with Romsey in 2019, Mason represented the Calder Cannons in the NAB League, managing nine games and kicking four goals.

Mason said he is eager to begin his VFL journey at Coburg.

“Really excited to sign with Coburg and get an opportunity to play at VFL level so it should be great,” he said.

“Just the whole idea of how the club is building, it looks to be building in a great way. There’s great people around the club and I’m just excited to get stuck into VFL footy and get a chance to play at the highest possible level.”

Standing at 197cm, the Coburg faithful should have high hopes for Masons’ impact on the game in the years to come.

“I think my versatility, play forward, back, through the midfield, my skills, kicking especially [to] break the game open,” Mason said.

Coburg General Manager, Sebastian Spagnuolo, is thrilled to have a player with Mason’s potential at Piranha Park.

“We’re really excited to welcome Riley to the club. Riley joins a long list of Calder Cannons graduates to have joined our club,” Spagnuolo said.

“Riley is an athletic tall that can play across both the backline and forward line, but the exciting thing is that at 197cms he has also been played as a midfielder, so we’ll be excited to see that further development and growth. As a sign of our longer term commitment to Riley’s development he’s been signed for two years.”

“Riley brings with him a thirst for continual growth and development whilst wanting to push himself to play at the highest level possible.”
