Seagulls Too Strong for Young Lions in Final Outing

In their final ever outing, Coburg’s Development League side was defeated by Williamstown by 104 points on Saturday morning at Burbank Oval.
Two players down before the game had even begun, the young Lions just couldn’t match the home side, finishing 6.7 (43) to 22.15 (147).
Playing with a home-ground advantage, the Seagulls knew how to get the wind to favour them, kicking a seven to two goal opening term.
But Coburg were able to keep their heads held high, and in the last quarter won some important stats that helped keep Williamstown from running away even more.
Billy Cannolo was first to add to the scoreboard, kicking a long goal from 50m out to get one home.
Connor Byrne was next, followed by top-up player Jehad Haddara from the Western Jets kicking two of his own.
James Svarc and Lachlan Waite booted the last two goals in the final term.
Alex Mioni and Matt Merlo led the way with 24 touches each, followed by Brandon Bailey (17) and Billy Cannolo (16).
Despite the heavy loss, Head Coach Paul ‘PK’ Kennedy was proud of his young side and how they approached the final term especially.
“I guess we ran out of soldiers towards the end of the year, and it was a shame because the first three-quarters of the season the guys played some great football and were right in the mix for third or fourth spot,” Kennedy said.
“Unfortunately we dropped away; on Saturday we were two players short and had five fill-ins, but I was really proud of the guys because in the last quarter we won possessions, contested ball, tackles, handball receives, and uncontested possessions.”
“For me, it would have been so easy to drop away and get smashed in that last quarter, but the boys really fought it out and showed a lot of pride”
“It was an unfortunate way to end the season but the guys really went out with their heads held high.”
We thank all our Coburg members, supporters, sponsors and family for your ongoing support this season, and hope to see you at our Best and Fairest Presentation Night on Thursday September 28th.
