SEWFL List Update

Coburg has re-signed the majority of its players from last season and added several new signings to lock in its list for the club’s women’s program for 2022.

The club has re-signed 21 players from its inaugural season including eight out of the top 10 finishers in last season’s B&F.

Leading goalkicker Sophie Damon and fellow SEWFL Team of the Year member Regina Said are among the re-signings. This follows the list of previously announced players to have re-committed which includes captain Maddie Edwards and B&F winner Dacia Abela.

Senior Coach Liam Cavanagh said it was awesome to have so many returning players back with the program for season 2022.

“With the depth of new players, we had trialling for spots this year – I wasn’t sure how many players from ’21 would be able to hold onto their position on the list. But to their credit, our returning players have worked so hard off over the off-season & completely raised the standard,” he said.

“We have so many great individuals who make up our club, so it’s awesome that we didn’t have to say too many goodbyes over the off-season and get to have this great group for another year.”

“The most pleasing part is we have achieved this without compromising the quality of our list, because so many players have improved – they are in the side for their playing ability, not just because we love them.”

The club has also been active in the off-season with the signing of 27 new players as the club expands its list to add to its senior team and to cater for a reserves side in 2022.

Coburg has recruited a mix of experience with playing coaches Ruzena May and Alex Volk and several EDFL Premier Team of the Year representatives in Shanel Camilleri (2021), and Kurtis Shine and Rachael Burton (2019), as well as a mix of young talent with 18-year-old (Angel Georgallis) and four 17-year-olds (Ruby Taranto, Mia D’Agostino, Chloe Prpic and Laura Elliott).

Cavanagh said that the core measure ‘Good People’ is used to decide whether someone is a good fit for Coburg or not.

Obviously you need to be able to play footy too or you may not make the list, but we also make sure that every person on this list is aligned to our core values & and wants success for this club,” he said.

“With that in mind, we have been able to create an environment of like-minded individuals, where everyone wants to be the best person they can be, for the benefit of the Coburg Football Club.”

“The job that Liam Cavanagh along with his assistant coaches and strength and conditioning team have done to firstly identify the talented players that make up our list but then also get the team on the same page, aligned and focused on its goals for 2022 has been amazing,” Coburg FC General Manager Sebastian Spagnuolo said.

“2022 will be a very exciting year for the club and in particular the women’s program with a development team adding to the program. This now sees our club as the club to be at for aspirational female footballers in the North-West region of Melbourne.”
